FAQ

  • There are a few things to look for. Open your switchboard and check for any of the following:

    • Ceramic fuses — small cylindrical plugs instead of switches. These are a clear sign your switchboard is decades old and not built for modern electrical loads.

    • No safety switches (RCDs) — safety switches are required under current Australian Standards. If your switchboard doesn't have them, it's out of date.

    • Fewer than 6 circuits — older homes were wired with far fewer circuits than a modern home needs. If everything runs off one or two circuits, your switchboard is undersized.

    • A wooden or asbestos backing board — common in homes built before the 1980s and a strong indicator the whole board needs replacing.

    • Burn marks, rust or a burning smell — any of these point to a switchboard that is already under stress.

  • Yes, it can be. Older switchboards — particularly those with ceramic fuses and no safety switches — don't have the protection mechanisms required by current Australian Standards. They can't respond fast enough to a fault or overload, which increases the risk of electric shock, damage to appliances, and in serious cases, electrical fire. If your switchboard is more than 25 years old and hasn't been assessed, it's worth getting it looked at. An ETS electrician can check it as part of a quote.

  • Most likely yes. EV chargers and solar systems require a dedicated high-current circuit, and your switchboard needs the spare capacity and correct safety switches to support it. If yours is older or already at capacity, an upgrade will need to happen before installation. The good news is getting both done together saves time and a second call-out fee.

  • The occasional trip is normal. If it's happening regularly — especially when running multiple appliances at once — your switchboard is likely undersized for your current load. An upgrade adds the capacity you need and properly distributes circuits so your home runs without interruption.

  • It's worth getting it assessed before work starts. Adding ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop, heated flooring or a new bathroom often pushes an older switchboard past its limit. Finding that out mid-renovation costs more time and money than addressing it upfront.

  • Yes, on both sides. If you're selling, an upgraded switchboard removes a common objection from buyers and building inspectors and can be marketed as a genuine improvement. If you're buying a home with an old switchboard, factor the upgrade cost into your offer — it's a known expense you don't want to be surprised by after settlement.
